Influencer Spotlight: Dana Truitt

A Baltimore blogger and her miniature pincher puppy Piper go on daily adventures, while we explore everything the beautiful MD DC VA area has to offer by way of food, fashion and fur-baby fun.

Why do you love working with Acorn?

Working with Acorn is so easy and organized, I definitely see myself working with them for a long time to come!

What inspired you to start a blog?

My love for writing and photography, along with my super creative nature are what started the thoughts of blogging. I love the idea of sharing all of the interesting things I come into contact with on a daily basis. The reason I started an actual blog was I wanted a deeper way to connect with my followers, and share my day-to-day activities and experiences.

I love Instagram which is where the mass of my audience resides, but I also wanted to be able elaborate more in a post. At the time Instagram didn't have the carousel option and we could only publish couple paragraphs of text and one image.

I also wanted a platform that was 100% mine, that I could maneuver, create and design from start to finish so it just screams Dana. I absolutely love the challenges of new content, working with brand and color pallets. I guess that’s what I chose to blog full time. I don’t think I would be happy doing anything else.

How do you come up with new content ideas? What’s that process look like?

I always go through a process. There are 3 things that I always include and combine to create good content:

  1. I make sure there is plenty of color, whether it’s my clothing, my surroundings or a prop, the color must be present. This captures the eye and makes people want to look.
  2. It needs to be concise and stick to my brand because this is what resonates with my audience. Piper is a huge part of that brand and is included in about 80% of my images.
  3. Everything must be relatable, genuine, and 100% Dana. I think that’s what my secret has been. People want someone they can relate to.

Beautiful photography plays a major role on your site. When did you learn to use a camera, and what’s your number one tip for taking great photos?

I have had a camera in my hand since I was 12 years old, I've always had a love of photography, I think it’s the creativity factor. Anything can be made beautiful if photographed from the right angle, I find that absolutely amazing and so interesting.

The one tip I can give is lighting, if you have the right amount of natural lighting your shot will be amazing. It’s what gives your shot that amazing sharpness, and it defines every little detail. Of course you can use false lighting, but it never looks as amazing as natural 💡 light.

When partnering with a brand how do you incorporate their product into your content?

I always find a creative and natural way to make the brand's product the focal point. I don’t work with a brand and recommend it to my audience unless I love it and would buy it myself. With that being said I find a way to include the product in my everyday life and shoot it when the time is right.

As I explained before I love for things to be spontaneous, I feel like it’s 100% more relatable and this is what sells products, I also feel like this is what drew my audience to me. I show them all sides of myself, I actually show them my real life, not just a manicured and one-sided version.

They get the real Dana and nothing less or more, I think this is the secret to a super successful Influencer.

What is your favorite thing about being an influencer?

I get to do what I love all day everyday - creating. Yes, at times it gets very busy and stressed, but I think of it as an amazing day-to-day challenge. I love creating and designing shots, putting together cute outfits and coming up with ideas for my Saturday dessert diva shots. I guess what I’m saying is the absolute ability to create, that’s what I love about being an Influencer. I definitely couldn’t do anything else, I absolutely love blogging full time!!

What advice can you give to aspiring bloggers or social media influencers?

I would only give one bit of advice to an aspiring blogger, be yourself, don’t step away from who you are as a person or change yourself. As long as you are real and 100% genuine you will reach the stars because people just want someone that is real, someone they can relate to!

How do you see blogging and influencer marketing evolving in the future?

I feel like blogging and social media are the new age, brands and companies want to work with us every day people, instead of huge celebs because we are real and relatable, and we aren’t so hugely expensive like the celebs. So in turn we have become the sought after ones, I think social media the absolute future. Think about it, nowadays everyone has a social media account. I was surprised when my parents and grandparents made accounts and use them almost everyday. It's literally a platform for everyone.

Lightning Round

What’s your favorite social media network, and why?
Instagram is my favorite platform because it has been where I have thrived, plus it’s just to easy and effortless. I do have to say my blog is a close second, it’s quickly growing and hopefully will reach the heights of my IG.

Favorite place in the world?
Santorini Greece, I say this because I have been wanting to go for 10 years now and this year I’m finally going, and Maldives is a close second.

Favorite season?
My favorite season is fall, I love the transition (so spring is right there with fall) I guess I’m partial to fall though because I’m a fall baby. I just love the change of the leaves and the weather. Same with spring the change of the flowers blooming and all the foliage coming back. The birth of something new is so so exciting wouldn’t you agree?

Skill you wish you had.
Hmm....I have always wished I could play the piano. Weird right, I just think it’s beautiful, it’s literally art to me. Another amazing creative outlet.

Skill you have mastered.
I have mastered the skill of floral design, I was a floral designer for almost 20 years. It was the only job aside from blogging that I love so much it never felt like work, plus I think flowers are good for the soul.

Greatest wish.
My greatest that’s a tough one. I really have to say I’m blessed and have literally everything I could ask for. I just wish to succeed as much as possible in my blogging career and perhaps become a national brand one day (Piper and I).
